I see so many Influencers on Youtube and Instagram that tell women how to dress. That’s absurd. What makes them an expert? Most of them have boring uniform styles. Personally, I never have worn a white tee shirt and you won’t catch me in a Breton top either.
I recently found out that Jane Birkin died; the Birkin bag was named in her honor. She was thought of as an “It Girl,” or style icon. I think of her as the cute fresh-faced British singer married to an older man. I didn’t know about her until living in Berlin while listening to French radio.
Here’s the song that put her on the map. Je T’aime is still affecting in modern times and was written by her then-husband Serge Gainsbourg. He wrote the song originally for Bridget Bardot.
Ironically he too was a fashion icon. Ahead of his time, they had an all-black stylized apartment and he introduced the three-day stubble.
But what makes an icon? By being an individual. I think that everyone owes it to themselves to wear what suits them and to know their body type. And yes even men have a body type.
Ironically last week I was cast on an industrial video for LA Metro. The man I was paired with was nice looking but I wouldn’t have cast us together. His features were small and his shape was very delicate. He was all gray and with my shoes on I hovered over him slightly.
Knowing what suits you takes time and practice. Learning and adapting to the style of others never works! We are different personalities, shapes, and sizes and have different coloring. For example, I see everyone defaulting to black. Black is for winter coloring only! Everyone else gets washed out because of its harshness. So why wear a color that absorbs heat?
Now I’m doing what I complained about. Oops.
On another note, I’ve been enjoying watching Julia on Max. It basically tells the story of how Julia Child launched us into food television as mundane as it seemed at the time. I tried to get into White Lotus but it was far too slow and banal for my mind.
I’ve been enjoying trips to the beach and when in my kitchen, I have been making a watermelon salad that consists of the juice of fresh lime and fresh mint. It’s refreshingly delicious. Try it.
