SPOOKY

Halloween is a time to dive into your creativity with a DIY Halloween costume you can make right at home. This spooky holiday is all about embracing the impossible including the ghosts, vampires, and boogeymen that creep during the night. While you may find yourself dressed as your favorite Disney character or movie villain, there are other times to let your imagination soar with a food-themed outfit that'll leave everyone hungry with just one look!

When it comes to finding the right costume, check to see what you can assemble at home. You'll be surprised by the ideas you'll come up with using materials stashed away in your closet and drawers. In other words, many costumes are surprisingly cheap to create. From condiment costumes (ketchup, mustard, and sriracha) to cardboard robots and lumberjacks, Halloween outfit ideas seem endless.

Here are some ideas I have to share: you can be a mermaid, make your costume from gold cupcake liners, or a white bird made from coffee filters and white cardboard, what about being a milkshake (cream, pink or brown tube dress) with a headpiece made with a cherry on top, lumberjacks costume made from ugg boots and a plaid shirt in your closet.

This brings me to my last item; for the past several years I no longer rent a costume, I simply shop in my closet. Some of my costumes have included, being Socialite Edie Beale from Grey Gardens, which included an old fur coat with holes in it, a turban, and short stretch pants circa the 1970s. Being Persian Princess Mumtaz Mahal garbed in one of my Sari’s, with stacks of bracelets, gold heels, and a bindi. Film Character Holly Golightly in a black sleeveless sheath dress, black pumps with a tiara and long gloves, and this year I will be disgruntled but impeccably dressed 1960’s Advertising copywriter from Madmen, in a silk blouse, pencil skirt, and pumps, flipped hair and black eyeliner with a cat eye. Naturally, I’ll have plenty of cigarettes along with my steno notepad.

Because I can’t think of Halloween parties without remembering the 80’s when I was dressed as a French maid in fishnet stockings and pumps in a tight little uniform. I went to a party and danced the entire night with a man named Simon. We hardly spoke a word to one another, we didn’t need to- the dancing did all the talking. We were so in sync and I had so much fun. Later that night he asked for my number which I gave him, but he waited a month to call me by that time I had a beau. As they say, you snooze, you lose, let’s hope this weekend you’ll be able to snooze with all the happenings.
